Our Learners

A group of Hackney Community College Hospitality and Catering students were recognised for their achievements over the past year with a special end of term awards ceremony this week.

The Entry level learners were commended for their success at the event held in Open Kitchen, the College’s on-site training restaurant, on Monday in front of proud relatives, friends and staff.

They were presented with certificates and gifts by Marcus Appleton and Geoffrey Osborne from the Worshipful Company of Cooks, which helps to fund the superb , professional standard facilities at the London City Hospitality Centre (LCHC), HCC’s hospitality and catering training centre.

Guests were treated to a delicious three course meal which was carefully planned and prepared by the students under the guidance of their tutors.

One guest commented it was the “best food they’d ever eaten” – a tribute to the students’ outstanding efforts.

The entry level courses at HCC are designed for people with learning difficulties and disabilities to help them gain a qualification alongside improving their basic skills and engaging with others.

Award winner Aaron Jones (pictured above) is just one of the students to have developed significantly since enrolling on the course, not just with his culinary skills, but also with his literacy and numeracy.

The 24-year-old from Hackney was awarded an additional certificate for the Most Improved Learner of the Year.

He said: “It was a nice surprise getting these certificates. I have improved a lot on this course and have made many new friends. Maybe I’ll become a qualified chef but for now I’m just enjoying learning how to cook.”

Fatma Tosuner, aged 18 from Hackney said: “I am really happy about getting this certificate. I can’t wait to learn more about cooking at the next level as I really enjoy making meals for my family.”

Both Fatma and Aaron will be progressing onto the next level course at HCC in September along with many of their classmates.

Students on the Entry level catering courses get the opportunity to help manage the College’s Essential Cafe while learning how to cook in high quality kitchens, all fitted with up-to-date equipment to accommodate their needs.
